When we arrived on Rapa Nui for our Honeymoon, the owner of our cabin met us at the airport and drove us out to her property. Along the way, she took us on a tour of the only village on the island, Hanga Roa. We passed the two banks, a few restaurants, and an area she called “the Sunset Spot.” At the time I thought, “Well, probably ONE sunset spot, not THE sunset spot…”
Every night at sunset, folks gathered at this one spot, Ahu Tahai, to watch the sunset — and after one visit, it was easy to see why. We made it there almost every single night to watch.
Day 1: A closeup view of the Sunset Spot’s Moai. (You can’t get much closer than this as it’s forbidden to ascend the ahu.)
We all have them.
